While I continue building my career as a health coach, I still have my “other” job to help pay the bills. I work in Marketing for a technology company, and recently had to travel for some industry events.
It was pretty cool as I was fortunate to go to Melbourne, Australia. I was slightly nervous about a 20 hour plane ride, but for anyone who has traveled a long distance, you know it can be done, and when you arrive, it makes it all worthwhile. Melbourne is a great city full of life, great food, art and culture. While I wasn’t trapped in a convention center doing my work, I was able to explore what the city had to offer. It was a walking city, so I got to see many museums and architecture while getting some exercise, and it wasn’t too hard to find some healthy options for meals. One of my favorite spots was the Boatbuilders Yard right on the Yarra River where I went twice for breakfast and got their avocado smash with smoked salmon and a small latte.
Everything was fresh and delicious!
It can be difficult to find healthy options when you travel, from the airplane food, to eating out all the time, so here are a few suggestions for the next time you head out of town:
Bring Food for the Airplane - At the airport, opt for foods like fruits (bananas and apples are usually available), trail mix, nuts or grab a small salad with dressing on the side. You can bring food on the plane with you so it’s a good idea to bring some of these items from home as well.
Drink Water - Be sure to grab a bottle of water and bring it with you on the plane. Most airlines offer complimentary drinks, but avoid all juices and sodas as they are loaded with added sugars. Stick with water or tea. Plus, a long flight can lead to dryness and dehydration so the backup water bottle comes in handy.
Get in Exercise - Stay at a hotel with a fitness center. Majority of hotels offer some type of workout facility with machines and weights. Also, make sure you get out and walk! Walking is a great exercise and you get to explore the city you are in. In addition, try downloaded a free video off YouTube.
Pack your Protein and Probiotics - Anytime I travel, I make sure to take my supplements with me. My main items consist of Nature’s Sunshine Super Trio, these proprietary blends offer a nutritious combination of essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, each an important component of daily nutrition. Also, I bring Bacillus Coagulans which is a strain of friendly probiotic that is naturally heat-stable. It can also more readily withstand the stomach's acidic environment, thereby better providing targeted support to the intestine and maintaining balance in the microbiome.
It’s important to keep your energy up, so bring I my protein powders with a shaker bottle. Love & Peas and Nature’s Harvest are my favorites and one scoop of each gives me the main nutrients I need to get through the day.
Get your ZZZ’s Nothing seems as good as sleeping in your own bed, and it can be tough sleeping in a hotel room. For a good night’s sleep, pack a travel diffuser and lavender essential oil. Lavender is widely used for calm and relaxation and promotes sleep when diffused in a room. Also, bring ear plugs. They block out noise from the hotel hallways and can help when trying to sleep on the plane.
Smart Food Choices When going out for dinner with co-workers, stay mindful to what you are choosing from the menu. Be sure to pick items with lots of vegetables, skip dessert or share with others, and it’s okay to have a glass of wine or you can stick with light colored cocktails like vodka without the added sugar mixers.
Be Grateful It’s easy to get caught up in work and running from one place to the other, but make sure you take some time to really look around the area and see what it has to offer. Be thankful that you are in this environment and notice the culture, the people, architecture and more. Can you check out some art at a museum? How about a walk through a botanic garden? Or maybe just walking up and down the city streets and see all the local shops and notice what’s different. Go Explore!
